Transforming TrackWise: A Cost-Effective and Scalable Cloud Migration for Life Sciences

The client’s objective was to find a sustainable, cost-effective solution to manage TrackWise without compromising performance or compliance. ZPS proposed migrating TrackWise to AWS Cloud, highlighting its ability to reduce infrastructure costs, optimize application performance, and enhance security. The proposal also offered scalability to handle global operations and streamlined maintenance with self-managed cloud operations.

Challenges Faced

A chemist is testing a newly discovered chemical using a variety of scientific equipment in his lab,
  • Inefficient On-Premises Maintenance: The Windows Server-based infrastructure required extensive maintenance, straining resources and increasing operational costs.
  • Performance Bottlenecks: The existing setup struggled to support global operations efficiently, resulting in latency and resource allocation issues.
  • Security Concerns: Strengthening data security through advanced features like LDAP and SSL was critical to meeting regulatory standards.
  • Lack of Scalability: The on-premises environment could not easily adapt to growing operational demands, limiting the company’s ability to scale.

Zamann Pharma Support’s Approach

Zamann Pharma Support (ZPS) proposed a groundbreaking solution: migrating TrackWise to AWS Cloud. This innovative approach would address the client’s issues while delivering significant cost savings, enhanced security, and operational efficiency. ZPS then designed and executed a comprehensive migration strategy through a structured four-phase plan:

Build:

  • Upgraded TrackWise to a newer version compatible with AWS infrastructure.
  • Established a robust AWS-based architecture, including Windows 2012 server instances and Oracle 12c RDS.
  • Implemented disaster recovery (DR) in a secondary AWS region, utilizing Multi-AZ and Cross-Region capabilities.

Migrate:

  • Transferred all existing data, reports, and artifacts to the AWS cloud.
  • Integrated TrackWise with essential interfaces like Veeva Vault, LIMS, and data lakes to maintain seamless operations.

Validate:

  • Conducted extensive validation in compliance with GxP standards, including system deployment checks, data integrity assessments, and functional validation.
  • Tested disaster recovery systems to ensure failover readiness.

Decommission:

  • Decommissioned the previous on-premises servers and databases after verifying operational readiness and data consistency in the cloud environment

Results Achieved

ZPS’s innovative solution delivered transformative results:

  • Pioneering Cost Savings: By adopting ZPS’s AWS-based proposal, the client reduced infrastructure and maintenance costs significantly.
  • Enhanced Security: AWS’s advanced security protocols, including LDAP and SSL, ensured data protection and compliance.
  • Improved Productivity: Transitioning DBA responsibilities to the application support team streamlined operations and improved response times.
  • Operational Efficiency: AWS tools like CloudWatch and RDS monitoring enabled proactive issue resolution and minimized downtime.
  • Scalability and Reliability: AWS’s flexible services provided the scalability and resilience needed to support global operations seamlessly.
